For teachers, teacher trainees + dedicated yoga students

This course is a unique opportunity to further develop key skills that will enable you to work with Ashtanga Yoga students in an inspiring, skilful and authentic way. Become a confident, hands-on teacher by learning the fundamental principles behind safe and beneficial adjustments. Learn to hold and maintain a safe space for transformational practice to thrive and flourish. Over the 6 days we aim to cover:

  • the alignment principles behind safe and effective adjustments
  • how to give hands-on adjustments
  • how to modify practice for common injuries and contra-indications
  • how to establish a safe “ holding space” that facilitates and supports a transformational practice
  • how to integrate the practices of pratyahara to quiet the senses during dynamic practice
  • how to guide students toward deep stillness and peace

Intention

Joey’s intention for the course is to impart skills that will help you to become a better teacher, allowing you to more effectively share the gift of Ashtanga Yoga with others.  The group size for the training is small – maximum 14, helping you to get more individual help during the course.

Schedule

8am- 6pm. Both days will start with a Mysore-style practice (you must be familiar with practicing independently – confident of the transitions and order of the poses up to marichyasana A). We will be covering a lot of material over the course of these four days, so we will aim to make sure you have time to rest during the day. We’ll take an hour’s break for lunch each day and aim to take at least two fifteen minute breaks throughout the day. We are in quite a rural location so do make sure you bring lunch and any snacks you might want with you to eat here, as cafes etc. are a bit far away to make it easy to get there and back within an hour and still get to eat and rest.

Content

We have chosen to teach this immersion differently than previous trainings, spreading the training over 6 days rather than 4, to give time to go into detail on more aspects of the practice and to make the training days more well-rounded. There will always be a restful element of each weekend, where adjustments for inversions and restorative poses are adressed and students get chance to recuperate after the highly physical nature of the training.  We have chosen to teach alignment and adjustment for poses according to category of pose, rather than following the order of the primary series. The poses covered will be mostly primary series poses, but poses from the intermediate series will be covered too.

Weekend 1

Focus on standing poses, will also cover some inversions and some restorative poses

Weekend 2

Focus on forward bends, will also cover some inversions and some restorative poses

Weekend 3

Focus on backbends, will also cover some inversions and some restorative poses

Suitability

Practitioners must have a regular, competent practice of primary series up to marichyasana A. You must know the order of poses and transitions well enough to be able to practice independently in the Mysore-style class each morning. (This does not mean you need to be able to do every pose perfectly). Please get in touch if you’re not sure whether this course is suitable for you.

Venue

The course will take place at our home studio which is between Mytholmroyd and Luddendenfoot in the Calder Valley: 9 Stoney Springs Mill, Burnley Road, Brearley, HX2 6DH. Our house is on the near side of the mill, with a wooden bike shed outside with a number 9 on it and an arched doorway. There will be some parking at the mill on the slope as you turn off from the main road (with the field on your left) and sometimes a space opposite our house. There is the possibility of parking on Brearley Lane which is the turnoff next to ours and is a few minutes walk away.

What to Bring

All equipment is provided at the studio but you are of course welcome to bring your own mat if you choose. We’ll also provide a course booklet with space to annotate images and make notes. Do bring: drinks, snacks, lunch.

Attendance for Parts 2 & 3

Priority will be given to those who can attend all three weekends/more than one weekend, but we understand that not everyone will be able to make all 3. The weekends are modular so you can attend weekend 3 even if you haven’t attended weekends 1 and 2, for example. We anticipate running the course in the format in future years as well, so if you can’t make the dates for one weekend, it is likely you’ll have more opportunities to cover this material another year.
